Teaching Capacities

Through his organization Society of Irregulars, John orchestrates a diverse range of immersive experiences in the visual arts. With public and private groups, organizations and schools John guides participants in the practice of painting and drawing, working primarily in oil paint and charcoal. His workshops take place both in and out of doors. Whether painting studies of past masterworks, delving into the color relationships within still life, or working out in the landscape on the motif, John guides students in their creative experience so as to maximize their own visual interaction with nature. He strives to cultivate an environment in which their imagination can manifest itself in its highest authentic visual form.

Museum experiences are another element to John’s teaching with Society of Irregulars. In these museum workshops, John guides group discussions based off active visual engagement with particular paintings. Participants are introduced to the subtly significant role art and nature can play in their own lives.

John leads wilderness trips in the western United States for the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). He first began working for NOLS in 2014. He has experience guiding students in various environments and technical disciplines including backpacking, backcountry skiing and canoeing. At NOLS, John teaches Leave-No-Trace camping and wilderness travel skills as well as the Leadership Curriculum. John’s career with NOLS was most active from 2014-2017. After a several year hiatus to pursue the arts (2018-2024) he is back to leading month long trips in the summer in the Rocky Mountains.
